SUNWAY UNIVERSITY GOES INDUSTRY-SAVVY Signs MoU with Sunway Shared Services Centre (IT SSC) for Research and Academics Collaborations

PETALING JAYA, 14 January 2013 - Sunway University is stepping up its efforts to produce graduates who meet the needs of industries by collaborating with Sunway Shared Services Centre (IT SSC). Today, it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IT SSC to collaborate on Information Communication Technology (ICT) related research and development activities.

The collaboration will be in the form of knowledge and skills through three vertical segments; applied software and technology research and development, social network knowledge using Web 2.0 technology, and talent development and recruitment. This is an achievement for the Centre of Innovation and Industry Linkages of Sunway University, which is a new setup to address the needs of various industries.

Professor Graeme Wilkinson, Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University said, “This partnership will enable students and researchers from Sunway University to assist the Sunway IT Shared Services Centre in carrying out research and development on specific technical difficulties, see the implementation of Knowledge Management strategies using latest internet technologies such as Web 2.0 (or Web 3.0 in the future) for better knowledge sharing facilities and foster improved collaborative communications.”

He also added that IT SSC will also be ahead in receiving talented students and graduates that will serve the company through internship and be able to offer them employability prospects.

According to Professor Wilkinson, Sunway University will also benefit from this collaboration as this serves as a platform to expose students and researchers to real-world problems. They will put their knowledge and skills into practice by formulating solutions towards technical difficulties through research and provide opportunities for researchers to understand and learn the needs of actual organisations.

“Through sponsorships from companies, a source of income can be generated for sustainable research and development activities in the future. This partnership will also enable commercialisation through successful applied research and growth from developmental projects with external stakeholder that can help generate loyalty fees or profit sharing for future sustainable research and development activities,” said Associate Professor Dr Lim Tong Ming, Head of Centre for Innovation and Industry Linkages, Faculty of Science and Technology, Sunway University.

“ICT related collaboration works such as software developments and knowledge sharing and reuse, using social media platforms and other forms of academic-industry collaborating activities will provide stronger ties between Sunway University and Sunway IT Shared Services Centre. Such collaborations will spur quality innovative ideas, better product development and systematic talent nurturing processes,” added Associate Professor Dr Lim who initiated and will be heading the project.

Mr. Cheah Kok Hoong, Director of Sunway Shared Services Centre remarked, “It is ultimately our intention to spur synergies between business and education sector via this MoU. We’re passionate in strengthening our Centre of Excellence, reinforced by the framework to attract, develop and retain talents from our renowned Sunway University. This is a significant event that marks the journey of extensive collaboration that provides a platform for sustainable long term growth and innovation for both Sunway Shared Services Centre and Sunway University.”

The signing ceremony saw Professor Graeme Wilkinson, Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University and Professor Poh Chit Laa, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology signing on behalf of Sunway University while Cheah Kok Hoong, Director of? Shared Services Centre and Larry Yap, Executive Director of Shared Services Centre signing on behalf of IT SSC.

Dato’ Chew Chee Kin, President of Sunway Group, Lee Weng Keng, CEO of Sunway Group’s Education and Healthcare Division, and Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director of the Sunway Education Group were present to witness the signing ceremony. ??????????
