Launched by the Minister of Education II, APEL enables prospective students to receive formal recognition for skills and knowledge they already possess which have not been previously assessed or awarded credit for entry to a master degree programmes. This includes learning and capabilities gained through experiences in a work, voluntary, home or leisure environment.
To qualify for entry into a master degree programme under APEL, an applicant must: be above 30 years old, possess at least STPM or diploma or equivalent qualifications, have relevant work experience, and pass the APEL assessment.
The application process begins with applicants submitting their details to MQA. Selected applicants will then undergo an aptitude test and a portfolio assessment. The outcome of a fruitful evaluation allows the applicants to receive an APEL certificate stating their readiness to apply for their desired programme, be it at certificate diploma, degree or master level. APEL is directed to courses in business management, information technology and the performing arts.
To date, over 170 applicants have been reviewed through APEL, out of which 13 applicants applied for undergraduate programmes, 108 for bachelor degree programmes, 47 for diploma programmes, and two for certificate programmes. A total of 107 applicants (out of 170) qualified through the APEL process.
Data shows that 60% of students who gained accreditation through APEL have already started their studies. Out of this number, 80% are pursuing their chosen programme at private institutions and the remaining at public universities.
