International Brand Mossimo Collaborates with Fashion Design Students

Mossimo, an American clothing company, founded in 1986 by designer Mossimo Giannulli is currently sold in 1,700 stores within the US. The renowned brand known for its dynamic street fashion was just recently launched in Malaysia. From vibrant graphics on t-shirts to more creative designs to the incorporation of gender-neutral styles, the brand is working to create clothing that are truly for everyone.

Mossimo partnered with ESMOD Kuala Lumpur Fashion Design students to bring fresh ideas and creativity into their designs. Over the course of a two-day intensive workshop, 20 students participated in designing graphic tees for the brand. They were given the ultimate freedom to create their own unique prints and craftsmanship on the shirts provided to them.?

“A lot of the actual designing is just trial and error, experimenting, having fun with it and seeing what works with the overall vibe,” said one of the students.

The process of designing was broken down into stages—from initial illustration proposals to material modifications and final enhancements. Students also applied skills from their fashion classes, like fabric manipulation, customizing shapes, and creating unique patterns. The workshop’s atmosphere was buzzing with creativity and energy as students bounced ideas off one another. Some went all out, bedazzling their designs, cutting and reshaping shirts and even incorporating intricate macramé details using strings.

All the students’ trendy and quirky prototypes were submitted and posted on the brand’s Instagram page (@mossimo_my). The top three designs were selected by a panel of Mossimo judges, while five additional winners were chosen based on the number of likes their T-shirt posts receive. Bridging the transition between academic learning and industry experience, this collaboration brought an exciting opportunity for these emerging designers to make their mark in the fashion world.

The top three winners, Lee Xin Qi, Erica Chua Qian Rou and Lee You Ning each shared the inspiration behind the designs that won the judges’ hearts. Lee Xin Qi drew inspiration from street art, particularly graffiti, capturing the authentic urban culture. Erica Chua Qian Rou blended elements of fire and skateboarding, symbolizing the passion and energy of skateboarding culture. Meanwhile, Lee You Ning’s design took a nostalgic turn, inspired by the iconic aesthetic of Windows XP, evoking a sense of early 2000s digital art which is making a come-back in the fashion world.

When asked how this experience has contributed to her as an aspiring fashion designer, Lee Xin Qi replied, “This workshop gave me such great learning experience! It pushed me to try new techniques and I learned a lot about turning an idea into a finished product, which has given me more confidence in myself as a future fashion designer”.
